Phenylmercuric Nitrate USP

Abstract:
Phenylmercuric nitrate is a member of benzenes. It is an organomercury compound, occurs as a white to pale yellow powder.

 

Uses/Applications:
It has powerful antiseptic and antifungal effects. It was once commonly used as a topical solution for disinfecting wounds. Used as a preservative in pharmaceutics aid.

a. Specified test. The mixture becomes yellow, and the characteristic odor of nitrobenzene is evolved

b. Specified test. A white precipitate is formed.

c. Specified test. There is no reaction in the cold, but upon heating in a boiling water bath for 10 min, a black precipitate is formed.

Solubility Slightly soluble in alcohol and in glycerin; very slightly soluble in water. It is more soluble in the presence of either nitric acid or alkali hydroxides.
Residue on ignition Not more than 0.1%
Mercury Ions No yellow precipitate is formed (mercuric ions), and the solution does not darken (mercurous ions).

a) Not less than 87.0% and not more than 87.9% of phenylmercuric ion

b) Not less than 62.5 % to not more than 63.50% of Hg (dried substance).

 

Shelf life, Storage and Packing

It should be stored in a segregated area in a cool and ventilated place away from combustible materials. Keep in a tightly closed container, sealed until ready for use. It is packed in 25kg or 50kg HDPE bags or drums as required.
