Phenylmercuric Nitrate BP

Abstract:
Phenylmercuric nitrate is a member of benzenes. It is an organomercury compound, occurs as a white to pale yellow powder.

 

Uses/Applications:
It has powerful antiseptic and antifungal effects. It was once commonly used as a topical solution for disinfecting wounds. Used as a preservative in pharmaceutics aid.

(a) Specified test. A white precipitate is formed that darkens slowly on heating.

(b) Specified test. A white, flocculent precipitate is formed.

(c) Specified test. The lower layer is orange-yellow.

(d) Gives reaction of nitrates

Solubility Very slightly soluble in water and in ethanol (96 %), slightly soluble in hot water. It dissolves in glycerol and in fatty oils.

Shelf life, Storage and Packing

It should be stored in a segregated area in a cool and ventilated place away from combustible materials. Keep in a tightly closed container, sealed until ready for use. It is packed in 25kg or 50kg HDPE bags or drums as required.
