Alum BP
Abstract
An alum is a type of chemical compound, usually a hydrated double sulfate salt of aluminium. It often refers to potassium alum, with the formula KAl(SO4)2·12H2O.
Use/Application
The most widely used alum is potassium alum. It was used since antiquity as a flocculant to clarify turbid liquids. Used as pickling agent to help keep pickles crisp.
