Potassium Iodate BP

Potassium iodate (KIO3) is a chemical compound. It is ionic, made up of K+ ions and IO3ions in a 1:1 ratio.


Potassium iodate is sometimes used for iodination of table salt to prevent iodine deficiency. Occasionally used as a maturing agent in baking. Used as an Oxidizing agent in volumetric chemical analysis.

Characters It occurs as a white crystalline powder.




  1. It gives reaction of potassium salts
  2. Specified Test. A yellow precipitate is produced immediately.
Solubility Slowly soluble in water; insoluble in ethanol (96%).
Acidity or alkalinity pH of solution is between 5.0-8.0

Sulfate Not more than 50 ppm

Assay Not less than 99.0% and not more than 101.0% of KIO3, calculated with reference to the dried substance.


Shelf life, Storage and Packing

It should be stored in a segregated area in a cool and ventilated place away from combustible materials. Keep in a tightly closed container, sealed until ready for use. It is packed in 25kg or 50kg HDPE bags or drums as required.
